Governance

The role of the Local Governing Body (LGB)

The LGB has a strategic role to promote high standards and educational achievement in the school. It is accountable to the Group Board of United Learning and works in partnership with United Learning, the Principal and the senior leadership team of the school to uphold the school’s vision and the ethos and core values of United Learning.

Powers and responsibilities

The LGB holds powers and responsibilities delegated from the Board of United Learning. Members act as a critical friend of the school, challenging and supporting the Senior Management team. It reviews school plans and policies, providing oversight to ensure that UL Group policies are implemented effectively, and monitors and reviews progress against targets, budgets and improvement priorities.  It listens to the views of staff and pupils and when necessary, convenes panels to review exclusions, suspensions, complaints and disciplinary procedures.

Structure

The LGB meets once every half term.

Individual governors act as link governors for certain matters; these are identified opposite their names in the list below. Link governors meet with key staff in their area and make regular reports to the LGB on these aspects of school governance.

The Principal is not a member of the LGB but attends its meetings, as do other members of the Senior Leadership Team.

Marylebone Academy

Marylebone Academy is a part of United Learning whose Trustees hold the ultimate responsibility for the governance of each United Learning school.

The Department for Education’s governance handbook 2020 identifies the essentials of effective governance as follows:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding the executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the effective and efficient performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.

United Learning’s Trustees delegate certain key roles and responsibilities to the school’s Local Governing Body (LGB) and these are set out clearly in our Scheme of Delegation which can be seen on the United Learning website.
